Prof. Azar Gat
Prior to his move to Shalem as head of the Department of Strategy, Diplomacy and Security, Professor Gat taught in the School of Political Science, Government and International Affairs at Tel Aviv University (which he headed twice), and held the Weizmann Chair for National Security there. He also founded the Executive M.A. Program in Security and Diplomacy and the International M.A. Program in Security and Diplomacy at the university, which he headed. Since 2024, following the outbreak of the October 7 war, Professor Gat has served as an academic advisor to the Institute for Security Studies (INSS).
Professor Gat completed his doctorate at Oxford. He has been awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship to Germany three times, and an Israel Science Foundation Fellowship three times. He has also been awarded the Rothschild-AVI Fellowship to Oxford, Fulbright to Yale, and a British Council Fellowship to Oxford. He has held appointments as a senior research fellow at the Marshon Center, Ohio University; a Goldman Israeli Professorship at Georgetown; and a Koret Senior Fellowship (twice) at the Hoover Institution, Stanford.
Professor Gat is the recipient of the 2019 EMET Prize in Strategy and Political Science. He is the author of many books that have been translated into Spanish, Greek, Turkish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Hebrew.
