Introducing Guy Levitsky, ’17

Age 23, Herzliya

Guy-Levitsky

Soon after Guy Levitsky, then three-years-old, moved with his family from the Ukraine to Israel, he was tapped as a promising athlete. At 6’8″, he excelled naturally on the basketball court, and helped his city’s team win several youth championships. Yet when he was offered an exemption from army service in exchange for a professional sports career, Guy declined, and earned a place in an elite, special-forces reconnaissance unit instead.

“We as a society can promote the moral responsibility of each citizen for the other, while at the same time fostering an entrepreneurial spirit.”

“When I thought about the type of person for whom I’d have more respect, a professional basketball player or someone who served his country in the way it needed most, it was clear which path I had to take,” Guy explains. The decision had even deeper repercussions for Guy’s life: While in the IDF, he chose to participate in the Native military-conversion program. Now, he hopes to use the broad grounding in the humanities he will gain at Shalem as a basis for an entrepreneurial career in business.
