Joel and Jeane Novak Essay Contest in Jewish Thought

Shalem College is pleased to announce an essay contest in the field of Jewish thought. Preference will be granted to essays that explore aspects of Jewish thought in the contemporary world, or the implications of classic Jewish texts for contemporary philosophical, theological, or spiritual problems facing the Jewish people. Entries will be judged on standard academic criteria.

The winner will receive a $5,000 prize, awarded by Joel and Jeane Novak of Tucson, Arizona.

The winning entry will be offered publication in Da’at, and translated into the other language at the expense of the Novak grant. Following its formal publication in Da’at, the essay will be posted prominently on the Shalem College website (https://shalem.ac.il/en/).

Conditions

Entries may be in either Hebrew or English. They may not have been previously published, and should be in the 6-12,000 word range.

Entry into the contest is limited to individuals under the age of 45 (at the time of submission) who do not hold tenure at an academic institution.

Faculty and staff of Shalem College and their immediate relatives are not eligible to enter the contest.

Deadlines

The authors of the five abstracts selected for consideration will be invited to submit the full essay by August 15, 2014.
