Zeina Shihabi

Middle East & Islamic Studies

Zeina Shihabi is an Ottomanist scholar specializing in the study of medical discourse in the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic. She teaches the Turkish language at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and serves as an Arabic language instructor at Shalem College. Zeina holds a Bachelor degree in Arabic Language and Literature and in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, as well as a Master degree in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her M.A. thesis focused on Modernity and Development in Medical Discourse through Ottoman Journalism during the Reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II (1876–1909), based on the periodical Servet-i Fünun.

In the future, Zeina intends to pursue doctoral studies focusing on the impact of the Syrian war on Syrian refugees who migrated to Turkey, examining the social and medical dimensions of the refugee experience.
