The English Program at Shalem College aims to cultivate our students’ capacity to express themselves profoundly and thoughtfully in English. We achieve this through integrated and guided engagement with literary and cultural works, expanding upon themes and ideas central to Shalem’s broader Core curriculum. Our small, seminar-style classes allow us an intimate setting for deep-diving into the questions that animate human life.
Our pedagogy is multi-faceted and aims to meet our students by challenging them not only to learn, but to understand how they learn, and for what purposes. Knowing that mastery of a language is fueled by desire, our faculty and staff offer students resources that help them articulate their questions and pursue them with fervor.
Throughout their studies at Shalem, students are encouraged to take part in our weekly and bi-weekly one-on-one tutoring program in speaking, as well as a fully equipped English Writing Center. In addition, in the summer, freshmen are invited to pursue a project that reflects the discoveries and hopes that have unfolded over the course of their first year in an intensive fifteen-day program of individualized tutoring and feedback.
Our curriculum incorporates classic texts in the Humanities and extends through native-level writing for those who qualify, incorporating instruction and practice in persuasion, narration, figurative language, and other advanced rhetorical and literary devices. Following their freshman year, when students enter and complete their studies in courses scaffolded according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), students are invited to take part in a range of additional disciplinary courses in English (“EMI”) throughout their four years at Shalem.
